(Wednesday, November 9, 1966, 5:00 a.m. GMT) — Paul McCartney of The Beatles was supposedly killed in a car crash today after storming out of a session for the Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band album and getting into his Austin Healey car, according to the “Paul is dead” hoax that would circulate in 1969.

McCartney, who flew to France on Nov. 6, 1966, was actually spending the week driving through the French countryside before meeting up with road manager Mal Evans at Bordeaux on Nov, 12, 1966. McCartney and Evans would drive to Seville, Spain, fly to Madrid and have a layover in Rome before eventually ending up in Nairobi, Kenya, for a safari vacation.

The two returned to London on Nov. 19, 1966, five days before the first session for Sgt. Pepper commenced at EMI Studios.
