(Thursday, November 24, 1966, 7:00 p.m.-2:30 a.m. GMT) — With their touring years behind them, The Beatles retreated from public view today to begin work on their eighth studio album at EMI Studio 2 in London, recording the first take of “Strawberry Fields Forever” (which would end up on the B-side of their next single, released before and separately from their next album).

Lennon had recorded an additional number of demos of the song with differing instrumentation and arrangements upon his Nov. 7, 1966, return to London from shooting the film How I Won the War in Spain through this date.
