The Beatles’ Apple Corps settles with Allen Klein’s ABKCO 40 years ago this hour #OnThisDay #OTD (Jan 8 1977)

(Saturday, January 8, 1977; 11:15 a.m. EST) — John Lennon, George Harrison and Ringo Starr of The Beatles, represented by Apple Corps Ltd., settled a lawsuit today with Allen Klein’s ABKCO Industries Inc. filed in 1973 after the Beatles decided not to renew Klein’s management contract, agreeing to pay $5 million (ABKCO’s cost was $800,000).

Lennon signed his “release from Klein” papers in New York at the Plaza Hotel, where The Beatles first stayed after arriving in America on February 7, 1964, appearing alongside Klein and his wife, Yoko Ono, for a publicity photo to mark the agreement.

Paul McCartney was not involved in the suit or the settlement.
