(Thursday, January 20, 1977, 12:03 p.m. EST) — Former Governor Jimmy Carter of Georgia was inaugurated today as the 39th President of the United States at the East Portico of the United States Capitol with Chief Justice Warren E. Burger administering oath of office.

Carter, a Democrat, succeeded Republican President Gerald Ford, after narrowly defeating Ford’s bid to be elected to a full term in the November 1976 general election.

Former U.S. Senator Walter Mondale of Minnesota was inaugurated as the 42nd Vice President of the United States, replacing Vice President Nelson Rockefeller, who withdrew from consideration for election in 1976.
