(Thursday, March 4, 1937, 10:30 p.m. EST) — U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt tonight put support for his plan to make over the Supreme Court squarely on the basis of party loyalty and responsibility.

In a speech delivered before 1,300 guests gathered at the Hotel Mayflower in Washington for the Democratic Victory Dinner and broadcast to more than 1,100 similar dinners held in all parts of the country, Roosevelt exhorted his party “and its associates” to “remain a natural rallying point for the cooperative effort of a those who truly believe in political and economic democracy.”
