(Tuesday, January 30, 1968, 12:15 a.m. Saigon Standard Time; during the Vietnam War, part of the Indochina Wars and the Cold War) — The Tet Offensive began early today as Vietcong raiders drove into the center of seven major Vietnamese cities, burning government buildings, freeing prisoners from provincial jails and blasting military installations and airfields with rockets and mortars.

The North Vietnamese Army plan was for the operation to begin on Jan. 31, 1968, but Viet Cong forces in the South had started prematurely.
