(Tuesday, February 6, 1968, 3:00 p.m. CET) — Athletes from 37 nations marched today in the opening ceremonies of the 1968 Winter Olympics, officially known as the X Olympic Winter Games, in Grenoble in the Alps in France.

French skier Alain Calmat, who had won the 1965 World Skiing Championship, lit the Olympic torch.

1158 (947 men, 211 women) competed in 35 events in 6 sports (10 disciplines) through Feb. 18, 1968.

Norway won both the most gold medals (6) and overall medals (14).
