(Friday, February 23, 1968; during the African-American civil rights movement (1954–1968)) — Police moved in with night sticks and gas guns today in Memphis as the city’s black leaders marched with workers eleven days into the Memphis sanitation strike.

The violence prompted strike leaders to invite civil rights icon Martin Luther King, Jr., to Memphis to make a speech and march with workers, which he did on Mar. 18, 1968.
