(Wednesday, March 9, 1988, 1:00 p.m. EST) — U.S. President Ronald Reagan made an emotional journey to South Bend, Indiana, today to the University of Notre Dame, Indiana, scene of one of his most memorable films, Knute Rockne, All American.

In that 1940 movie, Reagan played George Gipp, Notre Dame’s star football player. One of his lines in the film, “win just one for the Gipper,” ranks #89 on a poll of “AFI 100 Years…100 Quotes” and was later used as a political slogan by Reagan.
