(Monday, March 23, 1998, 6:00 p.m.-9:47 p.m. PST) — Titanic, an American epic romance-disaster film about lovers from opposite sides of the tracks who find their love tested during the maiden voyage of the doomed ocean liner, won 11 Oscars tonight at the 70th Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director (James Cameron).

Jack Nicholson won Best Actor and Helen Hunt for Best Actress, both for As Good as It Gets, Kim Basinger won Best Supporting Actress for L.A. Confidential and Robin Williams won Best Supporting Actor for Good Will Hunting.

Ceremonies were held at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles with with Billy Crystal as host.
