‘The Bridge on the River Kwai’ wins Best Picture 60 years ago this hour #OnThisDay #OTD (Mar 26 1958)

(Wednesday, March 26, 1958, 7:30-10:11 p.m. PST)The Bridge on the River Kwai, a British-American epic war film about World War II POWs who are forced by the Japanese to build a strategic bridge in Burma, won seven Oscars tonight at the 30th Academy Awards, including Best Motion Picture, Best Director (David Lean) and Best Actor (Alec Guinness).

Joanne Woodward won Best Actress for The Three Faces of Eve, Red Buttons won Best Supporting Actor for Sayonara and Miyoshi Umeki won Best Supporting Actress, also for Sayonara.

The ceremonies were held at RKO Pantages Theatre in Hollywood with six actors, including Bob Hope, serving as hosts.
