Dr. Martin. Luther King Jr.

A group of black youths smashed windows and looted stores as King led 6,000 demonstrators in support of the city’s striking sanitation workers, most of them African-American.

Another 60 people were injured and 276 were arrested.

King was whisked away from the march at the first sign of trouble, taken to a motel. It was the first time King had led marchers who had turned to violence.
