‘Annie Hall’ wins Best Picture at 50th Academy Awards 40 years ago this hour #OnThisDay #OTD (Apr 3 1978)

(Monday, April 3, 1978, 7:00 p.m.-10:30 p.m. PST)Annie Hall, an American romantic comedy film about a comedian and an aspiring singer who try to overcome their neuroses and find happiness, won four Oscars tonight at the 50th Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director (Woody Allen) and Best Actress (Diane Keaton).

Woody Allen also won Best Screenplay Written Directly for the Screen for Annie Hall (with Marshall Brickman).

Richard Dreyfuss won Best Actor for The Goodbye Girl. Vanessa Redgrave won Best Supporting Actress and Jason Robards won Best Supporting Actor, both for Julia.

Star Wars swept the technical categories by winning 6 out of its 10 nominations and a Special Achievement for Sound Effects Editing.

Ceremonies were held at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in Los Angeles, California, hosted by Bob Hope.
