(Thursday, May 15, 1958, 11:59 a.m. EDT) — Vice President Richard Nixon received a hero’s welcome today from President Dwight D. Eisenhower and other well-wishers on his return to Washington from a violence-marred tour of Latin America.

Police estimated that 100,000 had participated in the welcome, 15,000 at the airport and another 85,000 who lined the streets from the airport to the White House.

Nixon had been stoned by an angry leftist mob in Lima, Peru, and his limousine was attacked by a pipe-wielding mob in Caracas, Venezuela, during a goodwill tour of South America the began on Apr. 27, 1958.
