(Tuesday, June 4, 1968, polls closed in California at 8:00 p.m. PDT; during the Democratic Party presidential primaries, 1968) — Senator Robert F. Kennedy of New York rebounded tonight from his stunning loss in Oregon on May 28, 1968, winning both the California and South Dakota Democratic primaries.

Kennedy, who defeated Senator Eugene McCarthy in both contests (46 to 42 percent in California and 50 to 20 percent in South Dakota), was now seen as the main opponent to Vice President Hubert Humphrey for the 1968 Democratic presidential nomination.

Humphrey, who did not campaign in the primaries, concentrated on winning delegates in non-primary states, where party leaders controlled the delegate votes (at the time, only 14 states held presidential primaries).
