(Saturday, June 15, 1968) — The brother and parents of Senator Robert F. Kennedy of New York thanked the nation today for its sympathy and pledged to “carry on the principles for which Bobby stood.”

In a statement taped for television on the front lawn of the home of former Ambassador Joseph P. Kennedy, Senator Edward M. Kennedy said his brother’s campaign colleagues “will have to decide in a private way” what to do in the future.

Kennedy, 42, was shot and fatally wounded the June 5, 1968, at the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles just after he made his victory speech California’s Democratic presidential primary.

Despite extensive neurosurgery to remove the bullet and bone fragments from his brain, Kennedy was pronounced dead nearly 26 hours after the shooting.
