(Monday, June 24, 1968, shortly after 11:00 a.m. EDT; during the Civil rights movement) — Police in Washington, D.C., closed down a shantytown known as “Resurrection City,” today, evicting some 500 remaining members of the Poor People’s Campaign from West Potomac Park.

Police also arrested 288 demonstrators, including Ralph Abernathy, who succeeded Martin Luther King, Jr., as leader of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC).
