(Thursday, June 28, 1928, 11:55 p.m. CDT) — Governor Alfred E. Smith of New York was nominated for President today at the 1928 Democratic National Convention meeting at Sam Houston Hall in Houston, defeating U.S. Senator Walter F. George of Georgia 849.17-52.5 on the first ballot (after shifts).

The following day, on June 29, 1928, delegates nominated U.S. Senate Minority Leader Joseph T. Robinson of Arkansas for Vice President over retired U.S. Army Major General Henry T. Allen of Kentucky 1035.17 to 21 on the first ballot.

The Smith-Robinson ticket would oppose the Republican ticket of Herbert Hoover and Charles Curtis (nominated in earlier in June 1928, 10 months after incumbent President Calvin Coolidge announced he would not seek another term of office) in the United States presidential election, 1928.
