(Sunday, August 25, 1968) — Vice President Hubert Humphrey, front-runner for the presidential nomination, arrived today at O’Hare International Airport for the 1968 Democratic National Convention, which would begin the following day.

Humphrey was met at the airport by a bagpipe band, a crowd of young girls sent by Chicago Mayor Richard Daley as a welcoming committee, and more than a hundred newsmen.

Meantime, the Festival of Life opened in Lincoln Park today with some 2,000 anti-Vietnam War demonstrators gathered some ten miles from the convention site of the International Amphitheatre.

At the 11 p.m. curfew, the police moved into the crowd, pushing it into the street. Many people were clubbed, reporters and photographers included.
