(Wednesday, August 28, 1968, afternoon CDT; during the 1968 Democratic National Convention) — As Democrats debated the party’s Vietnam plank at their national convention, fighting broke out this afternoon during a mass rally at nearby Grant Park when three demonstrators started hauling down an American flag from a pole by the park’s band shell where speakers were denouncing the Chicago authorities, the Johnson administration and the war on in Vietnam.

Democrats would vote 1,567.75 to 1,041.25 today to reject a plank advanced by doves calling for an unconditional halt in the bombing of North Vietnam. Instead it adopted a White House-dictated plank supporting President Lyndon B. Johnson’s policy that called for a bombing halt but only on conditional terms.
