(Thursday, September 7, 1978, pronounced dead at 5:50 p.m. BST) — Keith Moon, the wild, raucous drummer of The Who rock group, was found dead today by his girlfriend Annette Walter-Lax hours after attending a party thrown by ex-Beatle Paul McCartney at Peppermint Park in Covent Garden.

Moon, 32, died from an overdose of Heminevrin, a drug intended to treat or prevent symptoms of alcohol withdrawal.
