(Saturday, October 19, 1968) — A crowd of screaming fans mobbed Beatle John Lennon and his girlfriend Yoko Ono today when they left a London court hearing on charges of possessing marijuana and obstructing police.

The couple was released on bail of $240 each until their trial, scheduled for Nov. 28, 1968.

When they left the courtroom, a crowd of about 200 to 300 spectators and newsmen closed in on them. Lennon nestled Ono, who looked terrified, in his arm as the crowd shoved and surged around them.

Lennon and Ono were temporarily living at Ringo Starr’s flat at 34 Montagu Square in London when they were arrested the previous day, Oct. 18, 1968, following a police raid that allegedly discovered 219 grains of cannabis resin.

The couple were taken to Paddington Green police station, where they were charged and ordered to appear in court the following day.
