(Thursday, October 29, 1998, 2:19:34 p.m. EST) — U.S. Senator John Glenn of Ohio, the first American to circle the planet in 1962, returned to orbit today in the space shuttle Discovery, this time as, at age 77, the oldest traveler in outer space.

Discovery would land safely at the Shuttle Landing Facility (SLF), an airport located on Merritt Island in Brevard County, Florida, on Nov. 7, 1998.
