(Friday, November 22, 1968, 10:00-11:00 p.m. EST) — The first scripted kiss between a Caucasian and an African-American on U.S. television was shown tonight on an episode of Star Trek, an American science fiction series.

White actor William Shatner (Captain Kirk) is seen kissing African-American actress Nichelle Nichols (Lieutenant Uhura) in an episode titled “Plato’s Stepchildren.”

The episode is popularly cited as the first example of a scripted interracial kiss on United States television, although other previous instances have since come to light.
