(Wednesday, December 21, 1988, 19:02:50 UTC) — 270 people were killed tonight when a terrorist bomb exploded aboard a Pan Am Boeing 747 over Lockerbie, Scotland, sending wreckage crashing to the ground.

All 243 passengers and 16 crew aboard Pan Am Flight 103 from London to New York were killed, along with 11 people on the ground.

In 2001, Libyan intelligence officer Abdelbaset al-Megrahi was jailed for life after being found guilty of 270 counts of murder in connection with the bombing. He died in May 2012 as the only person to be convicted for the attack.
