Nixon sworn in as 37th POTUS, Agnew as 39th VP 50 years ago this hour (Jan 20 1969)

(Monday, January 20, 1969, 12:15 p.m. EST) — Richard Nixon, 56, was inaugurated as the 37th President of the United States today on the East Portico of the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C., with Chief Justice Earl Warren administering the oath of office.

Nixon succeeded President Lyndon B. Johnson, who did not seek re-election.

Moments before Nixon was sworn in, Spiro Agnew, 50, of Maryland was inaugurated as the 39th U.S. Vice President.

Nixon and Agnew, Republicans, had defeated the Democratic ticket of incumbent Vice President Hubert Humphrey-Edmund Muskie in the November 1968 general election.
