(Thursday, March 20, 1969, the couple arrived shortly after 9:00 a.m. local time) — John Lennon, 28, of The Beatles married avant-garde artist Yoko Ono, 36, this morning at the British Consulate Office in Gibraltar during a 10-minute ceremony performed by registrar Cecil Wheeler.

None of the other Beatles attended the ceremony, which occurred only eight days after fellow Beatle and songwriting partner Paul McCartney married photographer Linda Eastman in London.

Within the hour, Lennon and Ono were en route back to Paris, where they had arrived on Mar. 16, 1969, hoping to wed there.
