(Friday, May 26, 1979, 3:03 p.m. CDT) — American Airlines Flight 191, en route to Los Angeles International Airport, lost an engine and crashed shortly after takeoff from O’Hare International Airport this afternoon, killing all 258 passengers and 13 crew aboard, along with two people on the ground.

The McDonnell Douglas DC-10-10 crashed into the ground just after a left-wing engine fell off during take-off due to improper maintenance.
