(Sunday, June 8, 1969; during the Vietnam War, part of the Indochina Wars and the Cold War) — Following a meeting at Midway Island with South Vietnamese President Nguyen Van Thieu, U.S. President Richard Nixon announced today that 25,000 of 540,000 American troops in South Vietnam would be withdrawn by August 31, 1969.

The first group to be removed from South Vietnam would be 900 combat infantrymen from the 9th Infantry Division of the U.S. Army, who would be “airlifted to the continental United States for inactivation,” according to Secretary of Defense Melvin Laird.

The withdrawal would be completed between July 8 and August 28, 1969.
