(Thursday, June 25, 2009, 2:26 p.m. PDT) — American singer, songwriter, and dancer Michael Jackson, widely regarded as one of the most significant cultural figures of the 20th century and one of the greatest entertainers of all time, was pronounced dead this afternoon at UCLA Medical Center after arriving in a coma.

The singer, dubbed the “King of Pop,” was rushed to the hospital, a six-minute drive from the rented Holmby Hills home in which he was living, shortly after noon by paramedics for the Los Angeles Fire Department. He was pronounced dead at 2:26 pm.

Jackson, who was 50, died from cardiac arrest induced by acute propofol and benzodiazepine intoxication.

Conrad Murray, Jackson’s personal physician, had given Jackson various medications to help him sleep at his rented mansion in Holmby Hills, Los Angeles. He was later convicted for involuntary manslaughter and served two years of a four-year prison sentence.
