(Monday, October 20, 1969) — The single “Cold Turkey”/“Don’t Worry Kyoko (Mummy’s Only Looking for Her Hand in the Snow)” by the Plastic Ono Band, a rock band formed by John Lennon of The Beatles and his wife, Yoko Ono, as a vehicle for their collaborative and solo projects, was released today in the U.S. (Oct. 24, 1969, in the UK).

It was the second solo single issued by Lennon, released when he was still officially a member of the Beatles, and the first to feature a performance formally recorded in a studio.

“Cold Turkey” was also the first song Lennon wrote for which he took sole credit; his previous compositions, including his first single release, “Give Peace a Chance,” were attributed to the Lennon–McCartney partnership.

Lennon had privately informed the other members that he was quitting The Beatles on Sept. 20, 1969, and first entered the studio as a solo performer just five days later to begin recording “Cold Turkey.”
