(Friday, October 26, 1979, 7:40 p.m. Korea Standard Time) — South Korean President Park Chung-hee, 61, was assassinated tonight during a dinner at the Korean Central Intelligence Agency (KCIA) safehouse inside the Blue House presidential compound in Gangjeong-dong, Seoul, South Korea.

Kim Jae-gyu, the director of the KCIA and the president’s security chief, was responsible for the assassination.

Park, who had been in office since 1962, was shot in the chest and the head, and died almost immediately.

Four bodyguards and a presidential chauffeur were also killed.
