McCartney releases ‘Wonderful Christmastime,’ films music video 40 years ago #OnThisDay #OTD (Nov 16 1979)

(Friday, November 16, 1979) — Former Beatle Paul McCartney and his band Wings filmed a promotional music video today for McCartney’s first solo single since 1971 “Wonderful Christmastime” at the Fountain Inn in Ashurst, West Sussex, England.

Although the members of Wings are not on the recording, they do appear in the video. The festivities are later intercut with brief scenes from their upcoming UK tour.

The song was released today as a stand-alone single in Britain (Nov. 26, 1979 in the U.S.), with “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reggae” on the B-side.

While “Wonderful Christmastime” peaked at No. 6 on the UK Singles Chart during the 1979 holiday season, it would not appear on Billboard‘s Hot 100 singles chart until December 2018, when it peaked at No. 47.

Although regarded as one of McCartney’s weaker compositions by numerous music critics, the song continues to enjoy significant Christmas time popularity around the world, and has been covered by numerous artists.
