(Saturday, March 5, 1960, 9:15 a.m. EST) — Staff Sergeant Elvis Presley, better known as the “King of Rock and Roll,” was honorably discharged from active service in the United States Army today at Fort Dix in New Jersey, nearly two years after being drafted into the service on March 24, 1958.

After departing from Fort Dix in New Jersey, Presley remained in the U.S. Army reserve for four additional years until completing his military obligations.

The train that carried Presley from New Jersey to Tennessee was mobbed all the way, and he was called upon to appear at scheduled stops to please his fans.

On the night of March 20, 1960, Presley entered RCA’s Nashville studio to cut tracks for a new album along with a single, “Stuck on You,” which was rushed into release and swiftly became a number-one hit.
