(Monday, March 10, 1980, approximately 11:00 p.m. EST) — Dr. Herman Tarnower, a prominent 69-year-old physician and author of the bestselling diet book The Complete Scarsdale Medical Diet, was shot and killed tonight in the bedroom of his secluded home in Purchase, New York.

Tarnower’s ex-lover, 56-year-old Jean Harris, headmistress of The Madeira School for girls in McLean, Virginia, was convicted of his murder at trial in White Plains, New York, in 1981. She served nearly 12 years in prison before being released in January 1993.
