(Friday, March 14, 1980, 11:14:35 a.m. Central European Time) — 87 people, among them 22 boxers and officials of a United States amateur team, were killed today in the crash of an Ilyushin Il-62 crippled by engine trouble minutes before attempting a landing near Okecie Airport in Warsaw, Poland.

Investigators determined the crash of LOT Polish Airlines Flight 7 was caused by the disintegration of one of the turbine discs in one of the plane’s engines, leading to uncontained engine failure.

The turbine disc was later found to have manufacturing faults.
