(Monday, March 23, 2010, ceremonies began at 11:30 a.m. EDT) — U.S. President Barack Obama signed the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act into law today at the White House in Washington.

The landmark legislation was designed to extend health insurance to about 32 million Americans over a 10-year period.

Together with the Health Care and Education Reconciliation Act of 2010 amendment, Obamacare represented the U.S. healthcare system’s most significant regulatory overhaul and expansion of coverage since the passage of Medicare and Medicaid in 1965.

Obama said it would “set in motion reforms that generations of Americans have fought for and marched for and hungered to see.”
