Taft becomes first POTUS to throw Opening Day ceremonial ‘first pitch’ 110 years ago #OnThisDay #OTD (Apr 14 1910)

(Thursday, April 14, 1910, afternoon local time) — William H. Taft began the tradition of the President of the United States throwing the ceremonial “first pitch” to open the professional baseball season today at Boundary Field, also known as American League Park II and National Park, just outside what was then the city limit of Washington.

More than 14,000 fans, including Mrs. Nellie Taft and Vice President James Sherman, joined the President to see the Washington Senators play the Philadelphia Athletics, which the Senators won 3-0.
