(Friday, May 8, 1970)Let It Be, the twelfth and final studio album by the English rock band the Beatles, was released today in Britain (May 18, 1970, in the U.S.) by Apple Records.

Let It Be was the final album that The Beatles completed before the band’s dissolution in April 1970, but most of that LP had been recorded (in January 1969) before the Abbey Road album sessions began.

Let It Be was released in tandem with the motion picture documentary of the same name, which premiered May 13, 1970, in New York City.

The film documents the group rehearsing and recording songs for the album. It also includes an unannounced rooftop concert by the group on Jan. 30, 1969, their last public performance.
