(Saturday, May 23, 1970)McCartney, the debut solo album by ex-Beatle Paul McCartney, peaked at #1 on today’s Billboard Top LP’s chart for three consecutive weeks (May 23/30, June 6, 1970).

McCartney recorded the album, released Apr. 20, 1970, in the U.S., in secrecy during a period of depression and confusion, following John Lennon’s private announcement in September 1969 that he was leaving The Beatles.

A press release in the form of a self-interview, supplied with UK promotional copies of McCartney, led to the announcement of the group’s break-up on Apr. 10, 1970.
