(Friday, July 15, 1960 8:00-8:25 p.m. PDT; during the 1960 Democratic National Convention) — Senator John F. Kennedy of Massachusetts accepted the Democratic presidential nomination tonight at Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum with a warning that the national road to a “New Frontier” called for more sacrifices, not more luxuries.

Kennedy was nominated July 13, 1960, at Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena after defeating Senator Lyndon B. Johnson of Texas 806 to 409 votes on the first ballot.

Johnson was nominated vice president by acclamation on July 14, 1960.

The Kennedy-Johnson ticket would oppose the Republican ticket of Vice President Richard Nixon of California for president and former Senator Henry Cabot Lodge Jr. of Massachusetts for vice president (nominated two weeks later) in the 1960 United States presidential election.
