(Thursday, July 28, 1960, evening CDT; during the 1960 Republican National Convention) — Vice President Richard Nixon of California accepted the Republican presidential nomination tonight at International Amphitheatre in Chicago, pledging that his administration would develop a “an offensive for peace and freedom” against communism designed to win the battle for freedom without war.

Nixon was nominated July 27, 1960, after defeating Senator Barry Goldwater of Arizona, who was not a candidate, 1,321 votes to 10 on the first ballot.

Former Senator Henry Cabot Lodge Jr. of Massachusetts was unanimously nominated for vice president on July 28, 1960.

The Nixon-Cabot Lodge ticket would oppose the Democratic ticket of Senator John F. Kennedy of Massachusetts for president and Senator Lyndon B. Johnson of Texas for vice president (nominated two weeks earlier) the 1960 United States presidential election.
