(Tuesday, September 22, 1970) — The remaining Monkees, Micky Dolenz and Davy Jones, recorded “Do It in the Name of Love” and “Lady Jane,” the final single produced in the band’s original incarnation, today in New York City.

The single was released in April 1971, several months after Peter Tork and Michael Nesmith exited the band, leaving only Dolenz and Jones to fulfill the recording contract they had signed in the mid-1960s.

Before the single could be released, Colgems Records folded and its catalog was transferred to Bell Records. Bell decided to release the single on its label, crediting “Mickey Dolenz & Davy Jones” as the artists (with the misspelling of Micky Dolenz’s name going unnoticed at the time). This was due to the prohibitive costs of licensing The Monkees name in the U.S.; however, in Japan, the record was issued under the name “The Monkees.”

“Do It in the Name of Love” failed to chart, and The Monkees officially disbanded for 15 years.
