(Saturday, September 26, 1970; during sessions for John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band) — Former Beatle John Lennon began recording John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band, his debut solo album, today at EMI Studios in London.

Co-produced by Lennon, his wife, Yoko Ono, and Phil Spector, the album contains a largely raw production sound with songs heavily influenced by Lennon’s then-recent primal scream therapy in California. Its lyrics reflect Lennon’s personal issues and includes themes of child-parent abandonment and psychological suffering.

Today’s session included early attempts at recording the songs “Isolation” and “Mother.”

Sessions for Lennon’s first solo work after the break-up of The Beatles would continue through late October.
