(Tuesday, November 6, 1900, during the 1900 United States presidential election) — President William McKinley of Ohio, a Republican, was re-elected as the 25th President of the United States today, defeating former U.S. Representative William Jennings Bryan of Nebraska, a Democrat.

McKinley and his running mate, Governor Theodore Roosevelt of New York, won 51.64 percent of the popular vote, resulting in 292 electoral votes.

Bryan and his running mate, former Vice President (1893-1897) Adlai Stevenson I of Illinois, received 45.52 percent of the popular vote, resulting in 155 electoral votes.

It was McKinley’s second consecutive presidential election victory over Bryan. In 1896, McKinley defeated Bryan by 271 to 176 electoral votes, having won the popular vote by a margin of 51.03 to 46.70 percent.

McKinley and Roosevelt would be sworn in for a four-year term of office on March 4, 1901.
