Video: 'Southern airways Flight 932 - 1970'
(Saturday, November 14, 1970, 7:36 p.m. EST) — Southern Airways Flight 932 crashed tonight into a hillside near Kenova, West Virginia, killing all 75 people aboard, including 37 players and 5 coaches from the Marshall University football team.
The twin engine DC-9 airplane was making its approach to Huntington, bringing back the team and its supporters from Greenville, North Carolina, where the Marshall Thundering Herd had lost to East Carolina University, 17–14, when it struck treetops on a high ridge one mile from the Huntington Airport’s runway 11.
The final NTSB investigation concluded that Flight 932, for unknown reasons, was flying below minimum descent altitude during its approach and that the most likely explanation was either a misunderstanding of the instrument data or a defect in the plane’s altimeter.
