(Sunday, November 23, 1980, 7:34:52 p.m. CET) — At least 2,483 people were killed today by the 6.9 magnitude 1980 Irpinia earthquake that devastated southern Italy.

The shock was centered on the village of Conza. Another 7,700 people were injured 250,000 were left homeless.
