(Saturday, January 8, 2011, 10:10 a.m. MST; during the 2011 Tucson shooting) — U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, a Democrat representing Arizona’s 8th congressional district, was shot and critically wounded today when a gunman opened fire as the congresswoman met with constituents in a supermarket parking lot in Casas Adobes, Arizona.

Six people, including federal District Court Chief Judge John Roll, Gabe Zimmerman, one of Giffords’ staffers and a nine-year-old girl, Christina-Taylor Green, were killed and 12 others also injured.

The shooter, Jared Loughner, 22, was sentenced in November 2012 to seven consecutive life sentences, plus 140 years in prison.
