(Sunday, March 28, 1971, 8:00-9:00 p.m. EST) — Ed Sullivan took to the stage in The Ed Sullivan Theater tonight in New York City for the last time as the host of The Ed Sullivan Show, a weekly live variety television series that debuted on CBS on June 20, 1948.

Folk singer Melanie was among tonight’s guests, performing “Look What They’ve Done to My Song, Ma” and “Ruby Tuesday.”

The show was cancelled by CBS on Mar. 15, 1971, as part of a mass cancellation of advertiser-averse programming.

While Sullivan’s landmark program ended without a proper finale, Sullivan would produce one-off specials for CBS until his death in 1974, including an Ed Sullivan Show 25th anniversary special in 1973.
