(Tuesday, April 13, 1971) — Former Beatle John Lennon recorded a demo today of his song “God Save Oz,” written with the hope of raising defense funds for the editors of the British-based Oz magazine, who were facing a conviction for contributing to the delinquency of minors.

Recorded at his Ascot Sound home studio, Lennon performed acoustic guitar and vocals accompanied by Steve Brendell on congas.

The title was later revised to “God Save Us,” because the American public would not
understand the relevance of the original title.

The song would be formally recorded (featuring Bill Elliott on lead vocal) in May and June of 1971 for release on July 5, 1971, credited to Bill Elliot & The Elastic Oz Band.
